The New Uke-Culinary Fiesta

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

November 7 – 11, 2018

It’s a winning combination: ‘ukuleles, food, and overall musical merriment with Craig McClelland, Heidi Swedberg, and Daniel Ward!  Add to that a stunning location, Santa Fe, New Mexico, in early November (when the crowds have dissipated, the winter chill still has not yet settled in, and the sky and surrounding countryside may still be  awash with color) and it really can’t get much better!

We’ll be staying at El Paradero, an intimate, somewhat secluded inn, and yet within walking distance of the world famous Plaza and Railyard Square. (And there’s a great brew pub right next door.) It’s a lovely, welcoming venue, where even those travelling alone will soon make long-lasting friends, connected by the simple bond of wanting to learn and make music (and fabulous meals) together. Plus, in addition to a hearty southwestern breakfast that will keep you happy all morning long, El Paradero also serves afternoon tea!  How very civilized!

And don’t forget the delicious Southwestern dishes you’ll learn to make from our culinary masters, Heidi Swedberg and Daniel Ward, the uke-culinary match made in heaven. Talent, experience, diligence, generosity, creativity, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. And the best part is that they are such very talented and fabulous teachers with years of professional experience in a broad range of skills and genres. In addition to teaching ‘ukulele, they love to cook and are every bit as much fun in the kitchen as in the classroom. On top of that, Craig McClelland, another multi-talented and professional musician, will be with us as well, making sure we have covered all the basses.  (Get it?  “Basses?”)

And, new for this year, we are adding Journaling with Mara Lonner.  For an additional $35 materials fee,Mara will be sharing with us the techniques and materials she employs every day to express herself with line, color, and shape as she reflects on the joys and tribulations of daily life. It’s another way to express yourself, this time through visual art, in a safe and personal format.  Kind of like playing the ‘ukulele, but in another dimension.

And getting to Santa Fe will be half the fun!  If you fly into Albuquerque, you can hop aboard the Rail Runner Express for a beautiful ride through the stunning countryside of southern New Mexico to Santa Fe, where we’ll pick you up at the train station and get you to El Paradero in time for Wednesday evening’s Welcome & Get Acquainted Party and a relatively early night, as the days to come will sport a a full menu of ‘ukulele fun and culinary merriment.

‘Ukulele workshops will be available for those on beginning, intermediate, and advanced tracks, plus special one-offs, opportunities to jam, and perform. Those wanting to cook will learn all about Southwestern cuisine (and possibly a few tricks from behind the bar.) And those interested in the more contemplative practice of journaling will be free to do that, as well.  And we’ll be doing our regular gig Under the Water Tower at the weekly Farmer’s Market on Saturday. Plus, there will opportunities to explore beautiful Santa Fe and its environs by day and by night. And as a special treat late Saturday afternoon, Daniel and Annika will be creating our very own tablao, a place where flamenco is performed, right next to the kitchen  while Heidi and the cooking crew whip up a tasty repast.

The retreat cost is $989 per person and includes all workshops and those meals prepared by the cooking classes.  (You are on your own for dinner on Thursday night, leaving you free to explore Santa Fe’s robust culinary scene….with recommendations from Heidi, Daniel, and Craig.)

Lodging at El Paradero is NOT included in the retreat cost. We have, however, arranged for a discount for retreat participants and will send you the contact information once you have registered for the retreat. Rooms at El Paradero are $145 – $195 per night and, in addition to lovely accommodations, include a delicious breakfast and afternoon tea. Until all the rooms at El Paradero ister Now!are full, we are only accepting registrations from folks who will be staying there.

Online registration is now open and we suggest you register soon as there has been a lot of interest in this one and enrollment is very limited. If you’d like to review the schedule first, you can do so here.  We will be posting actual workshops as we get a little closer to the date.

Hope to see you there!
