Get your Key to the Highway, visit the Backwater Blues, and Call it Stormy Monday

Big Bill Broonzy

Beginning, intermediate, and advanced ukulele players; players of high-G, low-G, baritone, and bass; blues harmonica wannabe’s and maestros–all are welcome to the inaugural Kernville ‘Ukulele Blues and Harp Fest, March 1 – 4, 2018.

T-Bone Walker

Instructors Kevin Carroll and Catfish Jack will take us on a deep exploration of three iconic blues tunes: “Key to the Highway” by Big Bill Broonzy, “Stormy Monday” by  T-Bone Walker, and “Backwater Blues” by Bessie Smith as we enter the world of  shuffle rhythm, triplets, bends, and lyrics that always “keep it real.” Small class size, workshops, jam sessions, and individualized skill building will help get us there and those interested will have ample opportunity to develop soloing and improvisation skills.

Bessie Smith

It all happens at Piazza’s Pine Cone Inn in Kernville,  about an hour’s drive  east of Bakersfield.  There is still room at the retreat and one room left at the Pine Cone, the place to be if you want to be in the thick of it!   (Overflow accommodations are also available next door and there s a campground nearby, at Lake Isabella, for those who want to stay in their RV.) The $439 registration fee includes all ‘ukulele and harmonica instruction offered during the fest and breakfast and lunch at “the Cone” each day, but not lodging.
